START AT THE TOP! THINK ATTIC ENCAPSULATION!

Maybe you only think about you attic twice a year: when you pull your holiday decorations down and when you put them back up. If that’s the case, it’s time to consider the impact that your attic has on the rest of your house.

When air heats up, it expands. That means in the summer as your attic grows increasingly hotter, that heat spreads through cracks in the floor to other parts of your house. In the winter, that cold air that you heat up in the rest of your house, pushes through the very same cracks and leaks outside.

But if that makes you feel like you just can’t win, we’ve got good news for you. Insulation can help. Properly insulating your attic can save 10% to 30% off your monthly heating bill.

WHAT’S YOUR R-VALUE?

R-value measures an insulation's ability to resist heat flow.

Insulation comes in many levels, which are specified by R-Value. R-Value lets you know the measure of your insulation's ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the better the thermal performance of the insulation.

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends between R-49 and R-60 of attic insulation in New Orleans, Slidell, Metairie, and other areas of Southern Louisiana. That's at least a 16 inch thick blanket of fiberglass insulation! However, the existing attic insulation in many homes may be as minimal as R-19, which hardly compares to the recommended R-value!

Closed-cell spray foam insulation R-value is the highest of any insulation material available at up to R-7 per inch. By contrast, fiberglass insulation ranges between 2.9 and 4.3 per inch or less if the materials have wrinkled due to improper insulation. Using thermal imaging cameras with a blower door, it’s not uncommon to see missing pieces of fiberglass or a two-inch gap between batts where heat can be lost, both of which decrease the insulation’s R-value. With well-installed foam, that’s far less likely to happen because it’s sprayed on.

AIR SEAL BEFORE YOU INSULATE!

Most heat lost in a building goes right through the roof. As air becomes warmer, it rises. If there are leaks in your attic floor, and there probably are, the heated air rises through them. This reduces the R-value of attic insulation and wastes 30% to 50% of your home’s heating energy. That’s why we encourage homeowners to air seal their attics prior to insulation.

Again, spray foam insulation is an ideal candidate for both sealing and insulating. As it expands, it clings to the interior of cracks, filling them and preventing an exchange of energy, air, and heat. By installing spray foam, you can have the best of both worlds in one affordable step.

Why Install Spray Foam Insulation?

Air moves in and out of a home through every hole, crack, and crevice. Roughly one-third of air infiltrates through walls, ceilings and floors. Adding an advanced insulation system is necessary to achieve optimal building performance. Spray Foam is that advanced insulation system.

Spray foam insulation can maximize a homeowner's investment by sealing the building envelope to stop conditioned indoor air from escaping and prevent unconditioned air from entering a home.

Air exchange in and out of a home is a leading cause of escalated energy bills. The mechanical systems that heat and cool buildings are continuously operating; reducing extreme temperature variations saves on the overuse of mechanical systems and leads to lower energy bills.
