Why people are choosing to go solar

Now more than ever the benefits of solar power outweigh the costs.

The typical American family spends around $1500 every year on energy bills. Close to one-fifth of that goes just to heating water for laundry, bathing, and washing dishes. But what if you could enjoy all the luxury afforded by your pricey utility bill without the high price? Many Americans are doing just that. In fact, 2013 witnessed a 421% increase in new PV solar systems being installed since the previous year according to research by the Solar Energy Industries Association.

At Sunlight Contractors, we’ve installed more than 290 solar systems since we opened our doors in 2009, and our customers are eager to let us know about the money they’re saving as a result. Elizabeth had a three kilowatt solar PV system installed on her roof in addition to having her attic encapsulated with spray foam, and her bill dropped from $200 per month to $50 per month!

On average, Americans who went solar in 2011 were projected to save over $20,000 over a 20 year period. In sunnier climates like ours, they’ll save even more.

Now more than ever the benefits of solar power outweigh the costs. In Louisiana, Act 428 makes it possible for homeowners to receive a tax credit for going solar. However, it’s important to note that in order to be eligible for that tax credit, the person who sells the equipment must be licensed by the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors and the person installing the system hands on must be the same. Before you do business with any solar contractor, be sure they’re licensed.

You should also be sure that you’re getting an accurate picture of what a solar system can do for you. At Sunlight, we pride ourselves on our professionalism and our integrity – after all, it’s that integrity that influenced us to go into the renewable energy field. That’s why we’re not willing to put solar PV panels on every house we visit. In some cases, we can tell that the location will prevent the homeowner from reaping the full benefits of a solar system. When that happens, we advise the homeowner to make the home as energy efficient as possible, but not to waste money on a system that they won’t be able to use.

If you’re considering having a solar system installed on your home, give us a call. We guarantee that we’ll give you honest guidance and quality workmanship. That’s the Sunlight Contractors promise.
