HOW DO SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEMS WORK?

Everyday, sunlight hits your roof’s solar panels with photons (particles of sunlight) that are then converted into electrons of direct current, or DC, electricity, which is the power commonly used in batteries. The electrons flow out of the solar panel and into an inverter that converts that DC power into alternating current, or AC, power. The newly generated AC power powers your television, computer, and toasters use when plugged into the wall outlet.

WHAT HAPPENS TO POWER THAT I DON’T USE?

A net energy meter keeps track of the all the power your solar system produces. Any solar energy that you do not use simultaneous with production will go back into the electrical grid through the meter. At night or on cloudy days, when your system is not producing more than your property needs, you will consume electricity from the grid as normal. Your utility company will bill you for the “net” consumption for any given billing period and provide you with a dollar credit for any excess production during a given period.

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF A SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) SYSTEM?

A PV system’s components include PV modules (groups of PV cells), which are commonly called PV panels; an inverter to convert solar power from direct current (DC) to the alternating current (AC) of the utility grid-connected system; wiring; and mounting hardware or a framework. A PV module arranges individual PV cells and the modules are grouped together in an array.

WILL SOLAR PANELS MAKE MY HOME MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT?

It’s necessary to reduce your energy waste before installing a solar PV system in order to get the most bang for your buck. We recommend a home energy audit or commercial energy audit before you begin any major energy project for your home or business. If your structure is properly insulated, renewable solar panel energy is a great way to help offset your energy costs, and because it reduces your reliance on your local utility company, it also helps reduce your carbon footprint.

WHAT SIZE SOLAR PV SYSTEM DO I NEED?

The size of your solar system depends on several factors such as how much electricity or hot water or space heat you use, the size of your roof, how much you’re willing to invest, and how much energy you want to generate. Contact us to determine what type of system fits your needs and to determine what system size will offer you the best financial payback.

HOW MUCH SUNLIGHT IS REQUIRED FOR MY SOLAR PV SYSTEM TO BE EFFECTIVE?

A photovoltaic (PV) system needs unobstructed access to the sun’s rays for most or all of the day in order to be effective. Though shading on the system can significantly reduce energy output, climate is not a major concern because PV systems are relatively unaffected by air temperatures. Likewise, snow cover typically melts quickly because panels are positioned in the direct sunlight. Abundant year-round sunshine makes solar energy systems useful and effective nearly everywhere in Louisiana.

CAN I INSTALL MY OWN SOLAR PV SYSTEM?

You could install a photovoltaic (PV) or solar electric system yourself, but to avoid complications or injury, you should hire a reputable professional contractor with experience installing solar systems. Most issues concerning PV systems occur because of poor or sloppy system installation. The best way to ensure and extend the life and effectiveness of your PV system is by having it installed and maintained properly.

HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE WILL MY SOLAR PV SYSTEM DEMAND?

While they are sophisticated electrical systems, PV arrays have few moving parts and require little maintenance. The basic PV module (an interconnected, enclosed panel of PV cells) has no moving parts at all and can last more than 30 years with little maintenance. In addition, solar systems that receive rebates through Louisiana and local utilities are required to meet strict conditions before tax credits are paid. Therefore, the components are designed to meet rigorous dependability and durability standards to withstand the elements. Click here to view current solar tax incentive information.

WILL I GET A TAX CREDIT IF I LEASE MY SOLAR PV SYSTEM?

No. When you lease your system, the leasing company takes the credit. Not you.

Until recent law changes in the Louisiana Legislature, solar leasing seemed to be everywhere, and it looked like a great bargain compared to the traditional model of purchasing a solar system. However, due to customer complaints, cheap Chinese equipment from disreputable companies, and a litany of other issues, Louisiana has amended their laws to reduce and eventually eliminate the solar leasing industry over the next couple of years.

In the meantime, solar leasing companies are rushing to sign as many leases as possible while they still can in order to cash in on the homeowner’s solar tax credits. Once the leasing incentives disappear, don’t count on a lot of these companies to be around to service and maintain your equipment five years from now.

IS IT BETTER TO LEASE OR OWN A SOLAR PV SYSTEM?

A leased system is someone else’s property. The leasing company can access your property at any time and even remove the system if they deem you in default. In addition, it is common for a liens to be placed upon your home for the duration of the lease. This poses a problem if you intend to sell the home. Unless the potential buyer agrees to take over the lease with the leasing company’s approval, you may not be able to sell.

We’ve run the numbers, and we would love the opportunity to share our results so that you can see for yourself what the leasing companies are actually offering. Add that $37 per month lease to a system built from cheap Chinese components and a balloon payment at the end of the lease term. It will cost you almost double the price of a higher output and more reliable American-made system installed by Sunlight Contractors.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHANGES TO LOUISIANA’S SOLAR TAX INCENTIVE PROGRAM?

Before you consider buying a solar system from any company in Louisiana, ask the following six questions:

  1. Will all of the parts and components of my solar system be certified as “Made in America” as required by the new law?
  2. Does your company have an in-house contractor licensed by the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors to perform solar installations who is also listed with the licensing board as the qualifying party for the company?
  3. If yes, will that contractor be purchasing the system components on my behalf as required by the new law?
  4. Is the qualifying contractor fully licensed and insured in the state of Louisiana?
  5. Will the qualifying contractor be the person performing the hands-on work to install my system? Please ask to see a photo ID from contractor.
  6. Will you be able to provide proof of all the information asked above along with a solar site evaluation report from a Louisiana Department of Revenue approved software like Solar Pathfinder?

If your solar salesperson cannot answer YES to every question and provide the documentation to prove it, then you may be denied up to $12,500.00 in cash from the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
